Do you already receive an sms alert when money goes into or out of your bank account? Well if you do, then it means that you are already subscribed to your bank's sms alert service. If you don't receive sms alerts, you probably have to visit your bank and make a formal application for the service and as far as I know, most banks don't offer this service for free.

SMS alerts in Nigeria come as a post paid service which sends bank customers an sms notification each time a transaction takes place on their account. The transaction could be for a debit or credit entry made by either a withdrawal or deposit into that bank account.

A typical sms alert from your bank would contain some basic elements such as title of message, account number, transaction value, date, your balance and person involved. So, if for instance, you use your ATM card to make a withdrawal from your bank for N10,000, expect to receive an sms alert indicating the ATM location, debit amount, balance and the date.

SMS alerts as I said do come at a fee and for Nigerian banks, it ranges from N4 to N10 per notification and depending on the rates they're using. Basic sms costs in Nigeria are actually at around N4 so expect your bank to charge you around that rate. SMS alert charges are normally debited to the person's account monthly or periodically and based on the bank's basic sms rate and the number of notifications sent.

If you've not subscribed to SMS alert or not receiving sms alerts from your bank but want to, you should just visit your bank's branch to fill and submit the sms alert application form You should also take note of your bank's term of service for that plan before signing your application.

If you've already being receiving sms alerts from your bank but don't like the monthly sms alert deductions/charges being made on your account, then you can always unsubscribe for that service also in writing to your bank.
