I just checked my bank statements today using internet banking and noticed that my bank charges me for sms alerts.

SMS alerts are those text messages you receive on your phone anytime a transaction is made on your bank account. If for instance you make a cash deposit at a branch into your account, you will get an sms notification to your registered phone if you've already signed up for SMS alert or notification service.

The fees attached to the SMS alert service depends on how many alerts were sent to you and the charge per sms. Nigerian banks normally charge from N1 to N5 but rates are not fixed and this means that they could charge higher rates.

SMS alert charges are normally deducted from the person's account balance on a periodic basis such as monthly or yearly and it is normally a debit to one's account.

Your bank is most likely to charge you for SMS alerts if you are already receiving SMS notifications and one easy way to find out how much is costs you is by checking your bank statement online. For now, I know that internet banking services are mostly free and you could use it to check if there are any charges for such SMS alerts.

Tired of having to pay for SMS alerts from your bank? Well there are 2 options I know through which you can avoid having to pay for it. 1. You can unsubscribe for SMS alerts at your bank or 2. You can change to a different bank that offers it for free.
