Receiving money through Western Union in Nigeria

One of the fastest ways of receiving money from abroad into Nigeria is by making use of Western Union. Yes, Western Union is fast and works with all the banks that are in Nigeria. For people who are sending money to Nigeria using the service, I think there is normally a fee for that and you can make use of Western Union online fee estimator.Ordinarily, there are other ways of receiving money from abroad into Nigeria such as making use of a bank wire. A person is allowed to send money to another person's bank account in Nigeria directly using a bank wire service and same goes for a Nigerian who also wants to transfer money abroad. In the first case, he sends money in foreign currency to a beneficiary's domicialiry account in USD, GBP or Euro. Bank wires uses the traditional method of moving from one bank account to another takes some time and in Nigeria, it takes about 7 days. A western Union money transfer service on the other hand takes only a few minutes and you'd be able to receive the money in Nigeria once it is available at the agent or bank location. Western Union's money transfer service is faster than bank wires based on what I've seen and it's an effective way through which many people receive money in Nigeria from abroad.A father who sent his son to the USA for graduate studies is normally cheerful when that son starts working and remembers to send money back to support his parents. How does Western Union work in Nigeria? Well it begins with an application at Western Union's official website or office with the sender providing the name of the receiver, the country and the amount he/she wants to send. An application is normally submitted with a cash or card payment at an agent location or on the web. After the transaction has been completed, the sender would be given a receipt and a Money Transfer Control Number(MTCN) which he would send to the beneficiary so that the latter would then proceed to the bank or WU agent to collect the money. In Nigeria, Western Union payments can be made directly to people's account or in cash but a new rule says that the receiver must also at least have a bank account with the bank where he wants to collect the payment. Payments for Western Union money transfers are normally still made in foreign currency and the receiver is allowed to choose to receive a Naira equivalent over the counter or choose to receive it in the foreign currency it was sent. So, to collect money from Western Union in Nigeria, what the receiver needs to have are the MTCN, Personal ID Card and at least a savings account. He/She would then proceed to the bank where he has an account and then request for a form to fill in the details of the funds they are expecting from abroad.

Re: Receiving money through Western Union in Nigeria Reply by Felix Okoli on Tuesday July 29, 2014 at 13:57:41: It works with the internet an works a bit like Facebook or Yahoo. Your bank will give you an account you can access on the internet using a username and password. With the internet banking, you will be able to do most of the things you normally do at the bank without having to go to the bank.

Re: Receiving money through Western Union in Nigeria Reply by Felix Okoli on Friday September 26, 2014 at 9:55:7: Just collect the MTCN and secret question from the person sending it and then go to your bank with your id card to collect it. You can alternatively tell the person to send it directly to your bank account if you want. If you are collecting it directly at the bank, they will give you a device on which you will press in the numbers.

If you still don't have either of that, just tell the bank about the problem, maybe they will provide other options for you.

You may also try using the website www.quickteller.com as an alternative. You will need to at least have a bank account with the bank through which you want to receive the western union payment in Nigeria.
